With a mother’s love and affection, Goddess Parvati asked the boy to guard the entrance while she bathed. She lovingly instructed him not to let anyone enter until she had finished her bath, and the little boy sincerely followed his mother’s command.

However, when Lord Shiva arrived at the entrance, the boy, following his mother’s order, did not let him in. Shiva in Sudden burst of anger killed the boy with his Trishul. Parvati was grief-stricken because of her son, and Shiva promised to bring him back.

 Lord Shiva ordered his ganas (attendants) to search for the first living creature and replace the dead body of the boy with the head of that creature. They brought the head of an baby elephant, and Lord Shiva fixed it on the body of the little boy. Then he gave life to him and announced that the boy had become the leader (Ganapati) of his ganas.

 Sankalp

Sit before him, take some water, flowers and akshat in your palm, and just say from the heart what you're hoping this puja will bring for your family.

 Avahana

Chant the mantras, offer a few flowers, and invite him in properly.
