According to Hindu mythology, when the Devas lost their strength after being cursed by Sage Durvasa, they became weak against the Asuras. Concerned about the growing imbalance in the universe, the Devas approached Lord Vishnu for help. It was then that Lord Vishnu suggested the idea of Samudra Manthan, the great churning of the cosmic ocean, Kshir Sagar, to obtain the Amrit, the nectar of immortality.
Following his guidance, Mount Mandara was used as the churning rod, and Vasuki Nag became the rope. The Devas and Asuras worked together to churn the ocean, leading to the emergence of 14 divine treasures, including Goddess Lakshmi, the deadly Halahala poison, and finally the Amrit Kalash carried by Lord Dhanvantari. In the end, Lord Vishnu took the enchanting form of Mohini to ensure that the amrit reached the Devas and cosmic balance was restored.
As the churning continued, several divine treasures appeared. Kamadhenu, the sacred wish-fulfilling cow, was given to the sages for holy rituals. Uchchaihshrava, the celestial white horse, was received by King Bali, while Airavata, the majestic elephant, became the vehicle of Lord Indra. The precious Kaustubha gem was adorned by Lord Vishnu, and the Kalpavriksha, the wish-fulfilling tree, was taken to heaven along with the heavenly Apsaras.
One of the most significant moments of the Samudra Manthan was the appearance of Goddess Lakshmi. Emerging from the ocean in all her divine glory, she chose Lord Vishnu as her eternal consort. Soon after, Varuni Devi was accepted by the Asuras, and the Moon God was placed on Lord Shiva’s forehead. Finally, Lord Dhanvantari appeared carrying the Amrit Kalash, the nectar of immortality. This led to a fierce battle between the Devas and Asuras.
Lord Vishnu was entrusted with distributing it. To ensure that only the gods received the nectar, Lord Vishnu took the enchanting form of Mohini. All the gods sat in one line, and the nectar was being served only to them.
But among the demons was a highly intelligent and cunning Asura named Svarbhanu.
Realizing the nectar's importance, he disguised himself as a god and sat between Surya (the Sun) and Chandra (the Moon) to drink the Amrit. As soon as the nectar touched his throat, Surya and Chandra recognized the deception and immediately informed Lord Vishnu. Without delay, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to sever Svarbhanu’s head from his body. But since a drop of Amrit had already touched him, he had become immortal.
His severed head became Rahu, and his body became Ketu. Thus, one being was divided into two eternal shadow entities.
Rahu’s identity is deeply tied to his mother, Simhika. That is why many Rahu stotras lovingly refer to him as Simhika Putra , a reminder that even this powerful shadow force carries the imprint of maternal connection.
Why Rahu Swallows the Sun and Moon
Rahu never forgot that Surya and Chandra exposed him. Filled with vengeance, he chases them across the heavens. Whenever Rahu catches the sun or moon, he swallows them , causing solar and lunar eclipses. However, because Rahu is only a head without a body, the Sun and Moon eventually emerge again.
