In Sanatan Dharma, Somvati Amavasya is considered highly auspicious for the worship of Lord Shiva and ancestors. When Amavasya falls on a Monday, it is known as Somvati Amavasya, which is regarded as a rare and spiritually powerful occasion. This year, the alignment becomes even more special because this sacred Somvati Amavasya is occurring during Adhik Maas after nearly 30 years.

🔱 Why is this time considered special for the combined worship of Shiva, Vishnu, and Ancestors?
Scriptures describe Adhik Maas as a sacred month especially dear to Lord Vishnu, while Amavasya is associated with ancestor worship and seeking blessings from departed souls. Ancestors are also believed to share a deep spiritual connection with Lord Vishnu. At the same time, Somvati Amavasya is considered highly important for the worship of Lord Shiva.

On this rare occasion after 30 years, a special ritual is being organised that includes 125,000 Pitru Gayatri mantra chanting, 125,000 Shiva mantra chanting, 125,000 Vishnu mantra chanting, and Pitru Tarpan. The rituals will be performed according to Vedic traditions at Someshwar Mahadev Temple, Dirgh Vishnu Temple, and Gangotri Dham to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and the divine ancestors. The collective chanting of such a large number of sacred mantras during this spiritually significant period is believed to create a deeply positive and uplifting atmosphere.

It is believed that repeated delays, unexplained obstacles, mental stress, family tensions, or recurring struggles in life may sometimes be connected to karmic influences and ancestral energies. In such situations, the combined worship of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and the ancestors is considered spiritually beneficial. One of the most special aspects of this ritual is its connection with Gangotri Dham. According to sacred beliefs, Goddess Ganga first descended to Earth at Gangotri after King Bhagirath performed intense penance. Ancient stories also describe that the descent of the Ganga was primarily meant to bring peace and liberation to the souls of King Sagar’s 60,000 sons. Since then, the waters of the Ganga have been regarded as a sacred medium for ancestral peace and divine blessings. Even today, devotees perform Tarpan and other rituals in the Ganga for the peace of their ancestors.
